Reading Habits that slow us down |
|
Our brains, are capable of absorbing information at an amazing rate. Unfortunately, we only tend to allow them to read at 150 to 250 words per minute.
This is all because of the habits we develop when learning to read. These habits, are essential to the learning process but go on become the barriers to evolving our reading once the learning process is complete.
The habits that need to be broken are...
Sub-vocalizing
- When we were first taught to read, we were taught to read out loud.
- The last instruction we usually received was 'now, sit down and carry on reading quietly to yourself'.
- As children we very carefully developed our sub-vocalizing skills.
- We all continue to do this throughout our lives and, in doing so, we are now experts.
- Stopping this is the first major hurdle in order to evolve your reading.
Regression
- As we read we continually flick back over the words or sentences we have just finished reading.
- When we are young and learning to read it is a very useful habit to aid comprehension.
- The problem is that we continue our habits long after their use has been fulfilled.
- We must learn and trust that we are now able to read straight through a text and remember it, and we must have the confidence to do so.
Span
- Most people read one word at a time, this is ideal when a child learns how to read.
- As adults, however, we can read 2, 3 or 4 word phrases at a time.
- The only thing stopping us is a lack of practice.
Speed
- In general everyone reads at the same speed, really slowly (about 150 to 250 wpm).
- This is very inefficient, as well as being boring, and is also why our thoughts often drift while reading.
- Our eyes and brain can easily read texts at a very much faster speed (500wpm+).
